The Return of The French Grand Prix

The French Grand Prix returned on June 24th, 2018… after a 10-year absence! So how does Renault Sport F1 celebrate its homecoming?

In order to create hype in the build-up to this event, we conducted a series of interviews with prominent Renault F1 figures past and present including legendary drivers Damon Hill, Fernando Alonso and Alain Prost to obtain a variety of fascinating and often unheard of anecdotes from their time with the team. For example, at the 1981 race in Dijon, did you know that ice from a local fish market helped improve the performance of the Renault engines and lay the foundations for the development of a water-air cooling system? Genius! Although the journalists weren’t a fan of the smell in the paddock…

In total, we created a series of seven interviews with accompanying captioned stills which were released periodically in the build-up to the race weekend. These were supported by two infographics optimised for an Instagram Gallery format. One featured facts from Renault victories at the French Grand Prix and the other was a recap of the famous duel between Gilles Villeneuve and René Arnoux at Dijon in 1979. This project culminated in the Hero film (below) that epitomises the history and panache of Renault Sport F1 at The French Grand Prix and a light-hearted ‘Good Luck’ message from the Renault Sport F1 icons of yesteryear to 2018’s Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz. This was released on the morning of race day.

All of these assets were shared across a variety of Groupe Renault’s social channels and received a positive reaction from nostalgic Renault Sport fans.
