Ford develops ‘Lane-Keeping Bed’ for Valentine’s Day

Do you share a bed with a space invader? Do you often wake up in the middle of the night forced onto the edge of your mattress while your loved one enjoys more than their fair share of the bed? The latest ‘Ford Intervention’ – a series of problems solved by applying Ford’s automotive expertise – aims to offer a solution to couples who suffer from lack of sleep due to bed hogging.

According to Ford’s research, studies show that 1 in 4 of those in relationships sleep better alone. And over time, sleep loss increases the risk of injury and accidents at home, work and on the road.

The ‘Lane-Keeping Bed’ features technology inspired by the brand’s Lane-Keeping Aid technology, which is available on most Ford models. The system monitors road markings and actively and safely guides the vehicle back into the correct lane by “nudging” the steering wheel in the correct direction.

Ford’s press release says: ‘This technology inspired the ‘Lane-Keeping Bed’ prototype, which features pressure sensors to identify when someone has strayed from their side of the bed and gently returns them to where they should be, with the help of an integrated conveyor belt.’

Ingenious, right? And they say romance is dead.

“Lane-Keeping Aid in our cars can make driving easier and more comfortable. We thought that showing how similar thinking could be applied to a bed, would be a great way to highlight to drivers a technology that they might not previously have been aware of,” said Anthony Ireson, director, Marketing Communications, Ford of Europe.

We absolutely love it and couldn’t agree more. Great job Ford!
